Blog-4: Water

http://www.cleanwaterstore.com/blog/sources-of-coliform-bacteria-contamination-in-home-well-water/
Total coliform bacteria are a type of microorganism that lives in soil, plants and the intestines of humans. This microorganism aids in the digestion of food. Fecal coliform bacteria are a subgroup of coliform bacteria that grows in warm temperature and is found in the fecal waste of warm-blooded humans. E. Coli is a type of fecal coliform bacteria. Water from a well should not have any coliform bacteria in it if the well is cleaned properly. Water that comes from springs or ponds should be disinfected and filtered with appropriate devices before the water is consumed in order to prevent coliform bacteria. The standards for healthy water conditions is no E. Coli or other fecal coliform bacteria. The standards for healthy water conditions are four or fewer colonies of total coliform bacteria.

Turbidity is the measure of the cloudiness of the water. It can be caused from sediment floating in the water or from the presence of disease-causing microorganisms. The standard for turbidity in drinking water is one nephelolometric turbidity unit, while the standard for public water is 0.3 nephelolometric turbidity unit.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that is known to cause cancer. Radon particles leave the water once ingested and get into a person’s lungs and cause lung cancer. There is currently no federal standard for the amount of radon in water, but there is a plan purposed that would require a radon level of no more than 4,000 pCi/L.
https://www.cdc.gov/parasites/crypto/
Cryptosporidium is a microscopic parasite that is found in the intestines of humans and animals. It can be passed through feces. It can get into wells through contamination, and in public water supplies through sewage overflows. Crypto, as it is commonly referred, should not be consumed, and if water is found to be contaminated with the parasite then it should be boiled for one minute then allowed to cool and settle. Also any wells that crypto is found in should be disinfected before water consumed from the well. Giardia is another type of intestinal parasite that is passed by feces. Giardia enters the water system in all the same ways as crypto. Giardia should be treated the same way as crypto, but because it is moderately chlorine resistant, an infected area should be checked once a year after being cleaned to make sure there is no reoccurrence.

Harmful Algae Bloom is causes by cyanobacteria, blue-green algae. This is very serious as it can cause anything from severe diarrhea and vomiting to death. The standards are broken down by type of person and type of toxins released by the algae. For the toxin microcystin bottle-fed babies, nursing mothers, dialysis patients, pregnant women and individuals with liver problems should not consume when the level is 0.3 ug/L. For anyone else the level is 1.6 ug/L. For the first group of people the danger level for the toxin anatoxin-a is 20 ug/L. Everyone else should not consume at 20 ug/L as well. For the first group of people, with the toxin cylindrospermospin the level is 0.7 ug/L. For everyone else, the level is 3 ug/L. Everyone should not consume water when the saxitoxin level is at 0.2 ug/L.

Blog-3: Lead poisoning in children

https://www.stlawco.org/Departments/PublicHealth/LeadScreeningProgram
135,010 children were tested in 2014 for lead poisoning in the state of Ohio. The threshold for lead poisoning in Ohio is five μg/dL or higher. 4,596 children were confirmed 5 μg/dL or higher. That is about 3 percent of the overall number of children tested. 1,298 children were confirmed having a blood lead level of 10 μg/dL or higher. This is about .85 percent of the number of children tested. There were 569 public health investigations, and 1100 individuals were Ohio Health Department certified to conduct lead hazard work. 775 notifications for lead abatement projects were received. These numbers led to two state wide campaigns and one statewide conference for lead poisoning in the state.

In Stark county, 4,731 out of the 154, 440 children were screened for lead poisoning. 760 children in Stark county that were screened had a blood lead level between 5-9 μg/dL. 13 children that were screened in Stark county had a blood lead level between 10-14 μg/dL. 15 Stark county children that were screened had a blood lead level between 15-19 μg/dL. Nine children that were screened in Stark county had a blood lead level 25 μg/dL or higher. Lead can be exposed to a person in a variety of ways. Some cosmetics contain lead in them which leads to lead poisoning when worn multiple as some the chemicals can enter the body. Some foods contain lead, so heavy consumption of these foods can led to lead poisoning. There are some hobbies that include using lead-based materials. An example of this would be painting items like toys or models with lead-based paint that many people have that led to lead poisoning because people will spend hours with these materials as they try to relax and unwind with these hobbies. When lead paint is disturbed, it creates lead dust in the environment that can led to lead poisoning when inhaled or otherwise gets into a person’s blood stream. Other ways lead is introduced to people is when through multiple occupations. These jobs include artists and painters (due to lead-based paint), auto mechanics (car parts may have lead), battery manufactures (batteries contain lead), firing range instructors along with police officers and military members because of bullets, lead miners, plastic manufacturers (due to the materials made can include lead), plumbers and pipe fitters (pipes contain lead), recyclers (most recycle materials can contain lead), and steel welders (galvanized steel is coated with lead), among other occupations. Lead can also enter the environment through contaminated soil, toys made with lead-based paint, and water from areas with elevated levels, among other reasons. There are many ways to reduce lead poisoning in children.

These ways include washing children’s hands often (especially before eating or going to bed), children should also be tested for lead, children’s toys should be washed often, if a home is not deleaded then all loose paint should be taped or covered in contact paper, dusty areas of a house should be scrubbed hard with any cleaner, children should be feed healthy snacks like fresh fruits and vegetables, children should be feed foods that are high in iron and calcium, children should not walk around with their food, and water used in cooking and drinking should be cold, among others.

Blog-2: Zika Virus

Zika is a virus that is primarily spread by the bite of an infected mosquito. Most specifically the Aedes mosquito will bite an infected person, which leads to the mosquito becoming infected thus rendering any other person it bites as infected.

The virus can also be spread by infected pregnant mothers to their fetuses. Zika can also be passed through sex with an infected partner. Some studies have also found the virus in the blood, urine, eye fluid, and saliva of an infected person. Zika was originally found in Africa, but has spread around the globe due to natural disasters and travel from businessmen and businesswomen, doctors, and mission workers. The Center for Disease Control has listed 44 countries where the virus has spread. These countries include America Soma, Argentina, Aruba, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Cayman Islands, Columbia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Fiji, Guatemala, Haiti, Indonesia, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Philippians, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Venezuela, and Vietnam, among others. These counties all share a similar humid climate, which leads to a rise in mosquitoes. People infected with the Zika virus have been found in other countries like the United State but they all were infected in one of the countries on the list. A blood test is needed to find out if a person has been infected with the Zika virus. Doctors tend to only test those with the symptoms of Zika, and that have traveled to a country on the list of places where the virus has spread to avoid a large amount of blood samples backing up labs. The symptoms related to Zika are fever, red eyes, joint pain, and a rash. Headaches and muscle pain are symptoms as well. The dangerous thing about Zika is that these symptoms do not always appear in those infected.

Women who have traveled to an infected area should wait eight weeks before trying to conceive a child. Men who have traveled to an infected area should wait six months before trying to make a baby. Pregnant women should not travel to any area that the virus can be found. These precautions are due to the dangerous effects the Zika virus does to babies of Zika having mothers. Babies born to mothers that had Zika are found to have microcephaly, which is a disease that stunts the head growth in babies. This stunted head growth can also lead to fetal brain damage. Microcephaly can also lead to miscarriages or stillbirths.

Congenital Zika syndrome can also happen to babies born to mothers with Zika. This syndrome is the birth defects of damage to the back of the eye, too much muscle tone, decrease calcium deposits in the brain, and limited range of joints. The preventions for Zika are to apply insect repellant, rid all standing water in and around homes to decrease places where mosquitoes can lay eggs, and to place screens in doors and windows to prevent mosquitoes from entering the home. People should also avoid travel to places where Zika is prevalent especially if the person is pregnant. There is no vaccine for Zika yet, so the treatments for the disease are a combination of fluids to prevent dehydration and taking drugs for the fever and pain. The Zika virus tends to run its course in a week.
